Persona 5 was developed by Atlus's in-house P-Studio team and published by Atlus, releasing in Japan in September 2016 and internationally (including on PS4) in April 2017. It's the fifth mainline entry in the Persona series (a spin-off of the wider Megami Tensei franchise), and is widely regarded as a high point for the series both critically and commercially, having sold several million copies worldwide.

The game follows a high school student (nicknamed "Joker" by players) who transfers to a new school in Tokyo after a false criminal conviction and discovers he can summon a "Persona" — a manifestation of inner rebellion — allowing him and a growing group of classmates to enter the corrupted, dreamlike "Palaces" that exist within the twisted hearts of adults who abuse their power. As the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, the group steals the "treasure" at the heart of each Palace to force a change of heart in its real-world owner, while balancing everyday high school life, part-time jobs, and social relationships that improve gameplay-relevant "Social Link" bonds.

Persona 5 received near-universal critical acclaim, praised especially for its distinctive, jazz-and-acid-house-influenced soundtrack, its stylish, magazine-cutout-inspired UI and menu design (considered a genre benchmark), and its turn-based combat system that rewards exploiting enemy weaknesses. It won numerous Game of the Year awards and nominations from major outlets in 2017.
