Alone in the Dark – PS5

A reimagining of the franchise that helped invent survival horror — this 2024 Alone in the Dark rebuilds the 1992 original with a star-studded cast and Southern Gothic atmosphere.

Product Description

Alone in the Dark (2024) was developed by Pieces Interactive and published by THQ Nordic, releasing in March 2024. It's a reimagining of the original 1992 Alone in the Dark, a title widely credited as one of the earliest and most influential survival horror games, predating and directly inspiring the original Resident Evil. This new version relocates the story to a Southern Gothic-inspired plantation asylum, Derceto Manor, following either detective Edward Carnby or resident Emily Hartwood (voiced respectively by David Harbour and Jodie Comer) as they investigate a missing persons case that unravels into cosmic horror.

The game blends psychological horror atmosphere, puzzle-solving, and light combat, deliberately drawing on H.P. Lovecraft-inspired cosmic dread alongside its Southern Gothic setting, while both playable characters offer differently framed perspectives on the same overarching mystery, encouraging replay to see both sides of the story.

Reception at launch was mixed, with reviewers praising the strong performances from its lead actors and atmospheric setting, while noting technical issues and combat/puzzle design that some felt didn't fully live up to the historical significance of the franchise it was reviving.
