Sifu – PS4 game

Brutal, unforgiving kung-fu combat — Sifu delivers a punishing martial arts revenge story built around a unique aging-on-death mechanic.

Product Description

Sifu was developed by Sloclap and published by Kepler Interactive, releasing in February 2022. It follows a young martial artist seeking revenge against five assassins who killed their family, using a Pak Mei kung-fu-inspired combat style across tightly designed, hand-to-hand-combat-focused levels.

The game's most distinctive mechanic is its unusual approach to death: rather than a traditional respawn or game-over, dying causes your character to age forward, resurrected but visibly older, gaining changed stat trade-offs (generally more powerful but with reduced maximum health) as a consequence, up to a point where aging too far results in permanent death and a level restart. This creates a genuinely tense risk-reward loop where every death has lasting consequences, while still allowing forward progress rather than pure repetition. Combat itself is deliberately difficult and skill-based, rewarding precise parries, environmental awareness, and pattern recognition against varied, often overwhelming groups of enemies.

Critical reception was very strong, with Sifu frequently praised as one of the standout action games of its release year, particularly for the ambition and originality of its aging mechanic and the satisfying depth of its combat system, alongside some criticism regarding its steep difficulty curve, which some players found unforgivingly punishing even by the standards of similarly challenging action games.
