Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – PS5

The breakout RPG phenomenon of 2025 — Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 delivers a hauntingly beautiful turn-based adventure from a first-time studio that took the world by surprise.

Product Description

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was developed by Sandfall Interactive — a small French studio founded in 2020, releasing this as its debut title — and published by Kepler Interactive (also behind Sifu), releasing on April 24, 2025. Set in a world inspired by Belle Époque-era France with dark fantasy undertones, the story follows members of "Expedition 33" on a desperate mission to stop a mysterious, godlike Painter who erases an entire year-group of humanity from existence with each passing year, forcing the expedition's members — including protagonist Gustave, who has just one year left to live — to confront mortality and loss on their journey.

Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game features turn-based combat enhanced with real-time reflex elements like parries and dodges, a departure from purely traditional turn-based RPG design. Despite a modest budget under $10 million relative to typical AAA productions, the game became one of the standout commercial and critical success stories of 2025, selling 8 million units by April 2026 and winning Game of the Year at both the 26th Game Developers Choice Awards and The Game Awards 2025, with widespread acclaim for its narrative, art direction, and original musical score.
