The Last of Us Part II – PS4

A bold, divisive, and technically extraordinary sequel — The Last of Us Part II expands the story with a darker, more morally complex exploration of cyclical violence.

Product Description

The Last of Us Part II was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, releasing in June 2020. Set several years after the original game, it follows Ellie, now a young adult, on a journey driven by a violent act that sets in motion a story explicitly built around themes of revenge, cyclical violence, and empathy for perspectives the player might otherwise resist — including, notably, extended playable sections from the viewpoint of a character positioned in opposition to Ellie for much of the game.

Technically, the game was widely praised as a landmark achievement for the PS4 hardware generation, with particular acclaim for its detailed enemy AI, environmental interactivity, and animation quality. Narratively, it took considerable creative risks compared to the tightly-controlled, broadly beloved original, including character and plot decisions that proved intensely divisive within its audience — generating one of the more significant "review bombing" controversies in recent gaming history alongside substantial critical-press acclaim, making it a notable case study in the gap that can emerge between professional critical reception and portions of a fanbase's reaction to bold narrative choices.

Critical reception from major outlets was overwhelmingly positive, with numerous Game of the Year awards in 2020, praised for its technical achievement and narrative ambition, even as public/community reception remained more sharply divided than almost any other major release of its year.
