Key specs at a glance

Figures come from Sony's product information and retailer listings. Ask our team to confirm what's in the box.

What's in the box

The soundbar, a wireless subwoofer, two wireless rear speakers and a remote, per Sony's description. Ask us to confirm.

What it's good at

This is the most powerful soundbar system in this group. Real 5.1 channels give surround sound, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support add a sense of height, and a dedicated centre speaker keeps dialogue clear. The wireless subwoofer and rear speakers reduce cable clutter, and Multi Stereo plays the same sound from front and rear speakers for a big, room-filling effect.

What to know

The soundbar is about 907 mm wide, so it suits TVs of about 43 inches and up. The rear speakers and subwoofer still need power sockets. For Atmos height effects, content has to be mastered in Dolby Atmos.

About the watt rating

Power ratings are a manufacturer's total output figure. They help you compare systems of the same type, but they don't tell you how good or how loud a system will sound in your room. Speaker quality, the number of speakers and the room size matter as much.

Who it's for

Home cinema fans who want 5.1 surround and Dolby Atmos.

Large living rooms that need power.

Buyers who want wireless rear speakers.

How it compares

The HT-S40R and HT-S20R, also in our range, have fewer watts and no Atmos. The JBL Bar 800 MK2 is a premium alternative with detachable wireless rear speakers.

Check your TV first

Most TVs connect with a single HDMI cable to the soundbar's HDMI ARC or eARC port, or with an optical cable. Tell us your TV model and we'll confirm the best connection.
