Sonic Frontiers – PS4

A bold new direction for the franchise — Sonic Frontiers introduces open-zone 3D exploration to the Sonic series for the first time.

Product Description

Sonic Frontiers was developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, releasing in November 2022. It represents a significant structural departure for the mainline 3D Sonic series, introducing what Sega termed an "open-zone" format — large, explorable islands connecting more traditional, linear speed-platforming challenge stages — rather than the fully linear level structure of earlier 3D Sonic titles like Sonic Generations or Sonic Forces.

The story follows Sonic and friends stranded on the mysterious Starfall Islands after their ship is caught in a strange dimensional rift, tasking Sonic with exploring open island regions, solving light puzzles, battling large mechanical "Titan" bosses, and entering self-contained Cyber Space challenge stages that echo the series' classic linear platforming for a more traditional Sonic speed-run experience within the broader open structure.

Critical reception was notably more positive than several recent prior 3D Sonic entries, with reviewers praising the ambition of the open-zone structure and the quality of its boss encounters, while some criticism focused on open-world elements feeling less refined than the tightly designed Cyber Space stages, and certain technical/performance aspects at launch.

If you enjoy Sonic Frontiers' open-zone exploration blended with speed platforming, you'll also want to try Sonic Origins for the classic-style Sonic games this modern entry ultimately builds on; Super Mario Odyssey for another open, exploration-focused 3D platformer from a rival mascot franchise; and Horizon Zero Dawn for a different, more combat-focused open-world game with a comparable "explore and battle large creatures" structure.
