Middle-earth: Shadow of War – PS4

An ambitious expansion of the acclaimed Nemesis System — Shadow of War lets you build and command your own orc army across Mordor.

Product Description

Middle-earth: Shadow of War was developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, releasing in October 2017 as the sequel to 2014's Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. It continues the story of Talion, a ranger bound to the spirit of the elf lord Celebrimbor, as they forge a new Ring of Power and wage a personal war against Sauron's forces across Mordor.

The game substantially expands on Shadow of Mordor's acclaimed Nemesis System — a procedural system generating unique, persistent orc captains and warlords who remember and adapt to past encounters with the player, developing individual personalities, rivalries, and grudges over the course of a playthrough. Shadow of War builds this into a full fortress-siege and army-building metagame, letting players recruit defeated orc captains into their own personal army and lead assaults on enemy strongholds. At launch, the game also included a loot-box-based microtransaction system tied to its endgame content, which drew significant industry-wide criticism; Monolith later removed real-money microtransactions entirely in a 2018 update following that backlash.

Critical reception was generally positive for the Nemesis System's continued depth and the satisfying free-flow combat inherited from the first game, though the initial monetization controversy notably affected the game's broader reception and public conversation around it at launch.
