The Elder Scrolls Online – PS4

An enormous, ever-expanding MMORPG — The Elder Scrolls Online lets you explore nearly all of Tamriel in a persistent online world set centuries before Skyrim.

Product Description

The Elder Scrolls Online was developed by ZeniMax Online Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, originally releasing on PC in 2014, with the console version (including this PS4 release) following in June 2015 as "Tamriel Unlimited," which notably dropped the game's original mandatory monthly subscription in favor of a buy-to-play model with an optional subscription for additional benefits. Set roughly a thousand years before the events of Skyrim, it lets players explore an unusually large portion of the Elder Scrolls setting of Tamriel — provinces from multiple prior single-player games are represented in one persistent, connected online world.

As a full MMORPG, the game features character classes, extensive questing (both solo-friendly story content and group-oriented endgame activities like dungeons, trials, and large-scale PvP battles in its signature Cyrodiil zone), and years of substantial post-launch expansion, with numerous paid Chapter expansions (each roughly equivalent in scope to a smaller standalone game) and DLC packs released regularly since launch, meaning available content varies considerably depending on which expansions a specific copy or account includes.

Reception improved considerably over the game's lifetime: initial 2014 reviews were mixed, criticizing a subscription model perceived as poor value and some MMO conventions that felt at odds with the Elder Scrolls single-player legacy, but the shift to buy-to-play and years of substantial content, systems, and quality-of-life improvements led to a considerably more positive long-term critical and community reputation.
