Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition – PS4

An underrated open-world crime classic — Sleeping Dogs combines martial arts combat, undercover police drama, and a richly detailed Hong Kong setting.

Product Description

Sleeping Dogs was originally developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix, releasing in 2012, with the enhanced Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition — featuring improved visuals and technical performance, plus previously released DLC — arriving in 2014 and later ported to PS4. The game follows Wei Shen, an undercover cop infiltrating Hong Kong's Triad criminal underworld, forced to balance loyalty to his cover identity against his real mission as the lines between the two increasingly blur.

What distinguishes Sleeping Dogs within the open-world crime genre is its emphasis on hand-to-hand martial arts combat rather than gunplay as the primary combat system — drawing clear inspiration from Hong Kong action cinema — alongside a richly detailed, densely packed recreation of Hong Kong that supports parkour-style traversal, car chases, and a wide range of side activities from street racing to karaoke. The story's undercover-cop premise gives it a distinct emotional throughline compared to many open-world crime games' more detached protagonists.

The game received strong critical reception, frequently praised as an underappreciated gem within the open-world genre, with particular acclaim for its combat system and atmospheric setting, though its commercial performance at launch was more modest than its critical reception might have suggested, contributing to its reputation as a "hidden gem."
