HP Series 5 524sf 23.8-Inch Full HD IPS 100Hz Monitor

Genuine HP | Brand New | 23.8-Inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS | 100 Hz | 300 Nits | 99% sRGB | HDMI and VGA | Slim Micro-Edge Design

Looking for the HP 524sf price in Kenya, an affordable 24-inch monitor in Nairobi, or a bright IPS monitor for the office, home or study? The HP Series 5 524sf is a brand-new, genuine 23.8-inch Full HD monitor with an IPS panel, a 100 Hz refresh rate, 300 nits of brightness and about 99% sRGB colour coverage. It has a slim three-sided micro-edge design and HP's Eye Ease low-blue-light feature, and it connects by HDMI 1.4 and VGA. It's available from Mega Store Kenya with delivery across Kenya. Buyers also search for it as an HP 524sf, an HP Series 5 24 inch monitor, an HP 23.8 inch IPS monitor, a 100Hz office monitor, an HP monitor with HDMI and VGA, a monitor for students and small businesses, or the HP alternative to the Dell SE2425HM.

This guide explains the monitor in plain language, using HP's own specifications. We explain what each feature means, how it compares with the Dell and Lenovo 24-inch monitors in our range, and where it's limited. If you'd like to talk it through, message us on WhatsApp.

The short verdict

The HP Series 5 524sf is a well-specified everyday monitor at an affordable price. HP's own data sheet lists a 23.8-inch IPS panel with 99% sRGB colour, 300 nits of brightness, a 1500:1 static contrast ratio, a 5 ms grey-to-grey response time and a maximum refresh rate of 100 Hz, which are better figures than many monitors at this price. The design is slim and modern, with a micro-edge bezel on three sides, an anti-glare finish and HP Eye Ease to reduce blue light. It has one HDMI 1.4 input, one VGA input, a tilt-only stand and no speakers or USB hub, and an HDMI cable comes in the box. If you want a bright, colourful, smooth monitor for study, home and office work without paying for extras you won't use, the 524sf is a smart buy.

Who this monitor is for

It suits you if:

• You want a good-quality 24-inch monitor for study, office work or home use.
• You want a bright, vivid IPS screen with about 99% sRGB colour.
• You want an HDMI cable included, so you can connect straight away.
• You want a slim, modern design that suits a dual-monitor desk.
• You connect by HDMI, or you still have a VGA computer or projector.

Look elsewhere if:

• You want a height-adjustable stand and a USB hub. See the Dell P2425H in our range.
• You want DisplayPort or USB-C. The 524sf has HDMI and VGA.
• You want a bigger screen. See the HP 527sf (27-inch) in our range.
• You do professional colour work, or serious competitive gaming.

Specifications in plain English

These figures come from HP's product specifications for the 524sf. Ask us to confirm the warranty for the unit you order.

What the 99% sRGB and 300 nits give you

Two of the 524sf's specifications are especially useful.

• 99% sRGB means the screen can show almost the full range of colours used for web pages, documents, photos and video. Colours look vivid and natural, which helps with everyday photo viewing and light design work.
• 300 nits is a measure of brightness. It keeps the picture clear in a bright room or near a window, where a dimmer monitor would look washed out.
• 1500:1 contrast gives good separation between light and dark for an IPS panel.
• 8-bit (6 bit plus FRC) colour depth means the panel uses a clever trick to show smooth gradients, which is normal at this price.

For web, office and study use, these figures are excellent. For professional photo or print work, a calibrated, wider-gamut monitor is still the right tool.

What 100 Hz gives you

The refresh rate tells you how many times the picture updates each second.

• 60 Hz is standard on older office monitors.
• 100 Hz updates 100 times a second, so scrolling through documents, spreadsheets and web pages feels smoother, and the mouse pointer tracks more naturally.
• It helps casual gaming and video, though it isn't a gaming monitor's 144 Hz or more.
• Retail listings say 100 Hz works over HDMI. Enable it in Windows Display settings, and use a good cable.
• VGA runs at a lower refresh rate, so use HDMI when you can.

Eye comfort: HP Eye Ease

HP builds eye comfort into the 524sf.

• HP Eye Ease reduces blue light, to make long hours at a screen more comfortable.
• An anti-glare finish reduces reflections from windows and lights.
• IPS viewing angles keep the picture steady, so you don't tilt your head to see the screen.
• A flicker-free backlight is typical at this level. Ask us if you need to confirm it.
• Good habits still matter. Follow the 20-20-20 rule, keep the room lit, and take breaks.

HDMI and VGA: which to use

The 524sf has two inputs, and each suits a different situation.

• HDMI 1.4 is the better choice. It's digital, sharp and carries the 100 Hz refresh rate. Use it with any modern laptop or desktop, and HP includes a cable.
• VGA is analogue and older. It's useful for old computers, some projectors and legacy equipment, and the picture is softer.
• No DisplayPort and no USB-C. If your computer has only DisplayPort or USB-C, you need an adapter, or a different monitor.

If you're unsure which cable you need, message us the make and model of your computer, and we'll tell you.

Setting up the monitor

1. Unbox with care, holding the panel by its edges, and attach the stand.
2. Place it on a stable desk, at a comfortable distance, about an arm's length.
3. Connect the power adapter, then the HDMI cable to your computer.
4. Switch on, and select the HDMI input if the monitor doesn't find it itself.
5. Set the resolution to 1920 x 1080, and the refresh rate to 100 Hz in Windows Display settings.
6. Tilt the screen so the top is at or just below eye level. The stand only tilts, so use a riser, or a VESA arm if supported.
7. Adjust brightness to suit the room.
8. Check the screen for dead pixels with white, black and coloured pictures.

A worked guide to choosing your first external monitor

If this is your first external monitor, a short checklist saves money.

1. Decide the size. 23.8 inches suits most desks. Measure your desk, and remember you need about an arm's length of viewing distance.
2. Check your computer's ports. A laptop with HDMI connects directly. A slim laptop may need a USB-C to HDMI cable.
3. Choose IPS for wide viewing angles and consistent colour.
4. Check brightness. 300 nits suits most rooms.
5. Check the stand. If it only tilts, budget for a riser or an arm.
6. Check what's in the box, especially whether a cable is included.
7. Check the warranty and the dead-pixel policy.
8. Don't overpay for features you won't use, such as speakers or a USB hub.

If you tell us your computer's make and model, we'll tell you the cable you need and whether this monitor suits it.

A student's guide to a second monitor

A second screen is a great study upgrade.

1. Connect your laptop to the monitor by HDMI, and extend the display in Windows.
2. Keep your notes or reading on one screen and your writing on the other.
3. Use the monitor for video lectures while taking notes on the laptop.
4. Raise the screen to eye level with a riser or a stack of books.
5. Use Eye Ease and Night Light for evening study.
6. Keep the screen clean, and cover it when not in use in a dusty room.
7. Back up your work to the cloud and a SanDisk flash drive.

Setting up a dual-monitor desk

Two monitors raise productivity, and the 524sf's micro-edge bezels suit a pair.

1. Place the monitors side by side, with the bezels meeting in the middle.
2. Connect each to your computer's two video outputs.
3. Set the arrangement in Windows Display settings, with the correct left and right order.
4. Match the heights with risers or VESA arms.
5. Use one as the main screen, and the other for reference, email and chat.
6. Match the model for consistent colour.

If your computer has only one video output, ask us about a USB-C hub or adapter.

Common problems and simple fixes

No picture. Check the power, the cable and the input source. Use the monitor's menu to select HDMI or VGA, and try another cable or port.

The picture looks blurry. Check that the resolution is set to 1920 x 1080 and scaling is correct.

The refresh rate won't go to 100 Hz. Use HDMI, check the graphics settings and the driver, and try a better cable.

A laptop won't connect. Many laptops need a USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter. Tell us your model.

Flickering or lines. Try another cable and port, and check for loose connections.

Backlight bleed or dead pixels. Check the screen in a dark room on a black picture. If you find problems, tell us straight away, with a photo.

If a problem continues, message us on WhatsApp.

Questions to ask before you buy any monitor

1. What size and resolution do I need?
2. What panel type is it? IPS gives the best viewing angles.
3. What refresh rate does it have, and over which port?
4. Does the stand adjust for height? If not, plan a riser or an arm.
5. Which ports does my computer need?
6. Does it include the right cable?
7. What warranty is included, and who honours it? Get it in writing, and ask about dead pixels.
8. Can I see it before I pay? A trustworthy seller says yes.

We're glad to answer all of these on WhatsApp or in the shop before you pay.

Looking after the monitor for years

• Clean the screen gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and a little water if needed, never with harsh chemicals.
• Keep it out of direct sun and away from moisture.
• Use a surge protector.
• Lift it with two hands, and never press on the screen.
• Keep the box if you move or sell it.
• Update your graphics driver if you see odd behaviour.

Warranty and after-sales: what to ask

A monitor is a long-term purchase, so ask us what warranty covers the unit you order, how long it lasts and what it covers. Retail listings show HP monitor warranties of 12 to 24 months in different markets, and Kenyan terms may differ. Check the policy on dead pixels, because brands differ. Keep your receipt, the serial number and the box. If a fault appears, message us on WhatsApp first, and we'll tell you the quickest way to get it sorted.

Understanding monitor specifications: a quick glossary

Specification sheets use terms that aren't always clear, so a short glossary helps.

• IPS. A panel type with wide viewing angles and consistent colour.
• Resolution. The number of pixels. 1920 x 1080 is Full HD.
• Pixels per inch (ppi). How dense the pixels are. Higher is sharper. The 524sf has about 93 ppi.
• Refresh rate (Hz). How many times the picture updates each second.
• Response time (ms). How quickly a pixel changes. Lower is better for motion.
• Brightness (nits). How bright the screen can get.
• Contrast ratio. The difference between the lightest and darkest the screen can show.
• sRGB. The standard colour space for web and documents. 99% means nearly full coverage.
• Bit depth. How many shades each colour can show. 6 bit plus FRC simulates 8 bit.
• VESA. The standard for wall and arm mounting holes.
• Anti-glare. A matte finish that reduces reflections.

Use these terms to compare monitors, and ask us if any is unclear.

Where a 24-inch Full HD monitor shines

The 524sf's size and resolution suit many everyday uses.

• Office work. Documents, spreadsheets and email sit comfortably on a 24-inch Full HD screen.
• Study. Reading, research and online lectures look sharp.
• Video calls. A second screen for the participants while you work on the first.
• Streaming. Films and series look good on a bright IPS panel.
• Casual gaming. 100 Hz and 5 ms response suit relaxed play.
• Retail and reception. A clean, bright screen at a counter.
• Coding and writing. Two windows fit side by side.

Power and energy use

Monitors use little power, and it's worth knowing the habits that save more.

• Lower the brightness in dim rooms.
• Switch the monitor off when you leave your desk for long.
• Use the monitor's power-saving settings.
• Connect it to a surge protector with a switch.
• If you have a UPS, a monitor draws little, so it's fine on a small UPS with a computer.

Over a year, small savings add up, especially in an office with many screens.

A short guide to dead pixels and backlight bleed

Every buyer should know what to check, so here is a simple test.

1. Switch the monitor on and let it warm up for a few minutes.
2. Show a solid white screen, and look for dark dots, which are dead pixels.
3. Show a solid black screen in a dim room, and look for bright dots or glowing at the edges, which is backlight bleed.
4. Show solid red, green and blue screens, and look for stuck pixels.
5. Move your head to check for uneven brightness.
6. Check the stand and the buttons for stiffness or damage.
7. Tell us straight away if you find a problem, with a photo, and we'll sort it with you.

Small amounts of edge glow are normal on many monitors, and we'll explain what applies to the unit you order.

Why choose HP for a monitor

Buyers often ask why they should choose HP.

• Consistent quality control, with fewer dead pixels and uneven backlights than unknown brands.
• Clear published specifications, which we've used to write this page.
• Real eye-comfort features such as HP Eye Ease.
• A recognised warranty, which we'll confirm for the unit.
• Easy pairing with HP laptops and desktops in our range.
• A slim design that suits modern desks.

A low-priced HP often costs little more than an unknown brand, and it's the safer buy.

Using a monitor in Kenya

Power protection. Monitors can be damaged by surges. Use a surge protector, and connect the monitor to the same UPS as your computer.

Dust and heat. Keep vents clear, and wipe the screen gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.

Placement. Keep the monitor away from direct sunlight, which causes glare and heats the panel.

Transport. Keep the original box if you may move the monitor, and carry it with two hands.

Warranty. HP's monitors carry different warranties in different markets, with 12 to 24 months shown in listings. Ask us for the warranty that applies to the unit you order, and keep the receipt and box.

How it compares with other options in our range

Against the Dell SE2425HM: a very close rival. The HP lists higher brightness and 99% sRGB, and includes an HDMI cable. The Dell has ComfortView Plus certification and a long Dell warranty in some markets. We'll help you choose by price and warranty.

Against the Dell P2425H: that monitor has a better stand, DisplayPort and a USB hub, at a higher price.
