Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition – PS4

The reboot that reinvented the franchise — Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition brings the acclaimed 2013 origin story to PS4 with enhanced visuals and technical improvements.

Product Description

Tomb Raider (2013) was developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix, with the enhanced Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition following on PS4 in January 2014, featuring improved lighting, character models, and technical performance over the original release. This game served as a full reboot of the long-running franchise, reimagining Lara Croft not as an already-established adventurer but as a young, inexperienced archaeologist stranded on a dangerous, supernatural island after a shipwreck.

The reboot's defining shift was tonal and mechanical: rather than the more puzzle-box-focused, methodical tomb-raiding of earlier entries, this version emphasizes survival, gradual character growth, and more grounded, visceral combat, chronicling Lara's transformation from a frightened survivor into a capable fighter across the course of the story. This design direction directly set up the two subsequent entries, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, forming a complete origin trilogy.

Critical reception was very strong, with the reboot widely praised for successfully modernizing the franchise, its combination of survival-horror-adjacent tension and traditional tomb-exploration content, and Lara's characterization, helping relaunch the series to significant commercial and critical success after a period of declining relevance for the franchise.
