Ratchet & Clank – PS4

A loving reimagining of a PlayStation classic — this 2016 Ratchet & Clank retells the original 2002 game's story, timed to release alongside an accompanying animated film.

Product Description

Ratchet & Clank was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, releasing on PS4 in April 2016. Rather than a direct remaster, it's a full reimagining of the studio's original 2002 PS2 game that launched the franchise, rebuilding the story, levels, and presentation with modern visuals and gameplay refinements while retaining the same core narrative beats: mechanic Ratchet and small defective robot Clank team up to stop the villainous Chairman Drek from destroying planets to build a new homeworld for his species.

The game was released to coincide with an animated Ratchet & Clank feature film that same month, with both projects drawing from and complementing each other's story content — some plot elements and jokes were adjusted or expanded across the two versions of the story. As with the wider franchise, its defining gameplay hook is an arsenal of imaginative, often comedic weapons and gadgets (from a gun that turns enemies into sheep to elaborate turret and vehicle sections) layered onto tight 3D platforming across varied planetary settings.

The game was very well received, with reviewers praising it as both a strong reintroduction to the franchise for newcomers and a loving, respectful update for longtime fans, frequently cited as one of the best PS4 exclusives of its release year and one of the better examples of a "requel" (reboot/retelling) done well.
