What it's good at
A solo microwave does the everyday jobs: reheating food, defrosting, warming drinks and cooking simple meals. At 700 W it handles these well, and 20 litres is compact enough for small kitchens, bedsitters and offices.
What to know
A solo microwave has no grill, so it won't brown or crisp food. At 700 W, cooking takes a little longer than on 900 W models. The 20 L cavity fits a standard plate but not very large dishes.
Is this the right size
A 20 L microwave suits one to three people, students and offices. The turntable is about 245 mm across on Hisense's mechanical 20 L models, so very large plates won't turn. For a bigger cavity or a grill, see the Hisense 25 L in our range.
Using a microwave safely
- Never use metal or foil in a standard microwave, and don't run it empty.
- Use microwave-safe containers. Glass and ceramic are good. Some plastics warp or leach.
- Stir and rest food. Microwaves heat unevenly, so stir halfway and let food stand before eating.
- Pierce or vent foods with skins, such as eggs, potatoes and sausages, so they don't burst.
- Use a voltage guard. Power fluctuations can damage the electronics.
- Leave space around it. Keep air gaps at the back and sides for ventilation.

How it compares
The black and white 20 L models, also in our range, share the same size. The 25 L grill model adds a grill.
