Sonic Forces – PS4

A dual-hero adventure — Sonic Forces lets you switch between Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, and a fully customizable original character to battle Dr. Eggman's conquered world.

Product Description

Sonic Forces was developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, releasing in November 2017. The story follows a world conquered by Dr. Eggman with the help of the returning villain Infinite, forcing Sonic and a resistance movement to fight back. Gameplay alternates between three character types: Modern Sonic (fast, boost-based 3D/2D hybrid stages), Classic Sonic (2D stages echoing the Genesis-era games, similar to Sonic Generations), and a fully customizable original "Avatar" character equipped with Wispon gadget weapons for unique traversal options.

The character-customization system was a notable new addition for the series, letting players build their own hero from a range of species, outfits, and accessories, with their custom Avatar playing a meaningful role in the story campaign alongside Sonic. Stage design generally favored fast, boost-heavy linear runs over the more exploration-focused elements later introduced in Sonic Frontiers.

Critical reception was mixed, with reviewers generally finding it a middling entry in the franchise — reasonably fun in short bursts but suffering from a short campaign length, a divisive story and antagonist, and level design that many felt lacked the depth or ambition of the series' stronger entries like Sonic Generations or the later Sonic Frontiers.

Similar Games

If you enjoy Sonic Forces' fast, boost-based platforming, you'll also want to try Sonic Frontiers for the series' more recent, more ambitious open-zone direction; Sonic Origins for the classic 2D-era games that inspired this title's Classic Sonic stages; and Sonic Mania Plus for a newly built, highly acclaimed classic-style Sonic experience widely considered superior to Forces' more modern stages.
