Returnal – PS5

A punishing, atmospheric roguelike shooter — Returnal delivers intense third-person combat across an ever-changing, hostile alien world.

Product Description

Returnal was developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, releasing as a PS5 console exclusive in April 2021. It follows Selene, a space pilot trapped in a time loop after crash-landing on the hostile alien planet Atropos, forced to battle through procedurally regenerating environments and increasingly difficult enemy encounters, with death resetting her progress but revealing new story fragments each cycle.

The game combines Housemarque's arcade-shooter heritage (the studio previously known for titles like Resogun) with roguelike structure and deep narrative mystery, delivering fast, bullet-hell-inspired combat that became one of the definitive early showcases for PS5's DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Critical reception was extremely strong, winning multiple Game of the Year nominations in 2021, praised particularly for its intense combat feel, atmospheric sci-fi horror tone, and technical achievement.
